Tom Waits In The Awkward Silence

acrylic on canvas
Never really sure what to think when he sits across from me, black coffee in heavy white diner mug. Should I ask about work, make small-talk? Nah, that'll sound like bullshit, I'm sure. Been sittin' here a while sippin' my coffee. He's probably wondering why I'm so quiet. Probably thinks I'm weird or somethin'. Why is it always like this with Tom? He's so obstuse, even when he's not talking. Hell, it's worse when he's not talking. Just...makin' those faces. Lookin' around, not really looking at me. I don't know why he keeps inviting me out for coffee. This is so uncomfortable. I mean, I like the guy, I guess, but...I dunno. Do we even like hanging out? Well, I should finish off this cup, and tell him I gotta go. Wife waitin' back at the hotel, tired from tour, something like that. Yeah, I gotta go. We'll do this again sometime, Tom. Take it easy there, okay? Handshakes and secret relief, from both sides I'm sure, as we break company. Whew. I gotta get in the wind.
